We previously spoke about getting health insurance with pre-existing conditions. However, travel insurance with medical conditions is an additional concern that some might have – whether backpacking or just travelling abroad for a short holiday. Obviously, nobody wants to pay ridiculously high premiums – which is why we decided to investigate the topic.
Whether you have a certain medical condition or suffer from a particular disability, getting travel insurance with medical conditions can seem rather tricky. This is understandable: standard health insurance (whether travel or otherwise) generally won’t cover a pre-existing condition. Alternatively, you may only receive ridiculously quotes with ridiculously high prices.
But there are a couple of things you should know before you completely despair…
Travel Insurance with Medical Conditions: A couple of points
The whole point of insurance is to cover you for an unpredictable event – and the risk of that happening is slightly higher if you travel. If you suffer from a certain condition, you are also more likely to need medical attention even while abroad. However, you could still find decent travel insurance with medical conditions if you shop around.
Before we continue, first consider what most insurance companies consider to be a “medical condition”:
- Any kind of heart condition (high blood pressure is included)
- All types of cancer
- Any breathing conditions you may have (asthma is among them)
- Conditions affecting the joints and bones
- Gastrointestinal conditions
Do not forget to declare these. If you fail do so and require medical attention, the insurance company will refuse to cover you if you’ve lied about having one.
In addition when getting travel insurance with medical conditions, make sure to take a policy out as soon as your trip is booked. The good news here is that with a bit of shopping around, you may be able to find an affordable policy that actually caters to those who have pre-existing conditions. So, always do your research first!
Medical conditions, travel insurance and single trip policies
When it comes to travel insurance with medical conditions, you’ll probably find than an annual policy is far too expensive. That’s why looking at quotes for single trip policies is actually a better option. Look at cover for a specific trip and see if that ends up working out cheaper – in some cases, it really can!
Of course, if you’re going on multiple trips a year then an annual travel insurance policy could work out cheaper!
Note: If you’re travelling to Europe, you should bring your EHIC (European Health Insurance Card). It affords you free access to medical attention while abroad!
Travel Insurance with Medical Conditions: You may already be covered!
Before you actually go out and get travel insurance, check with your bank. It may sound funny, but a lot of fee-charging banks offer benefits such as travel insurance. So, you may already be covered! Even then, make sure to check the terms before you go away. Often, mild conditions don’t really matter – but you may want to check first!
Watch out: Credit cards sometimes offer what’s known as travel accident insurance. This only covers accidents that occur with planes, trains or hire cars that are paid for with the card! It is NOT a substitute for standard travel insurance.
